What are Counting Scales?
A counting scale, also commonly referred to as a piece counting scale or a parts counting scale, is a specialized type of weighing instrument that makes repetitive counting tasks quicker and more efficient. They work by using a sample weight (either the first piece, or a weight you enter yourself through the keypad) and dividing the total weight by the weight of the sample to give the number of parts or pieces.
It’s important to remember that because counting scales work by dividing the total weight by the sample weight, they cannot be used to count different sized pieces.
How are Counting Scales Used in an Industrial and Commercial Environment?
Counting scales are incredibly useful and are commonly used in industrial and commercial environments for completing tedious and repetitive counting tasks. They can be used on production lines to ensure that boxes contain the correct number of products inside and are especially common in quality assurance departments and distribution warehouses for reviewing the number of subjects in a lot before being approved for dispatch.
They are also very useful for year-end inventory tasks where workers would have to manually count large numbers of often small, fiddly products by hand.
What Is the Best Counting Scale for Me?
Counting scales come in all kinds of shapes and sizes so it’s important to find the right one for you and your needs.
For counting and packaging small parts, a Latitude LBX Compact Bench Scale is a great option. If you're in a warehouse or factory, a Cruiser (CCT) bench counting scale is probably your best bet as it is small in size and versatile. For heavy duty industrial counting, GFC floor counting scales are ideal as they feature a solid stainless steel construction that is both robust and easy to wash down after use.
A CDT counting scale can be connected to a separate weighing platform to extend the capacity when needed (for end-of-year inventory, for example, or if you plan to expand).
