Students apply the Ideal Gas Law to determine the molar mass of an unknown gas found in a common household product.

This printable education experiment contains a detailed teachers' guide, 2-page student information sheet, and single-page student question worksheet for printing and distributing in the classroom.

Age Level

This experiment is designed for ages 14-18. It can be adapted for ages 11-13.

Subject

Gases and the Kinetic-Molecular Theory, science as inquiry and data analysis.

Purpose(s)

  1. 1. To demonstrate the use of the Ideal Gas Law, Daltons’ Law of Partial Pressures, and the Kinetic Theory of Gases.
  2. 2. To determine the molar mass and formula of a gas from the measured properties of gases.
  3. 3. To have students analyze data that has been collected using laboratory equipment (balances).
